Federal/State Government and Private Sector Documents & Standards

Government forms and documents, both state and federal, are now available in digital format on the World Wide Web. The tables below contain links to several sites that contain government forms, including U.S. and state income tax forms. There are also links to several private organizations that generate technical standards, including the International Standards Organization (ISO) and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). Electronic access to government forms has simplified many tasks for private citizens.

There are also links to several private sector organizations that supply non-government national and international standards.
Current DoD acquisition policy discourages the use of government standards and specifications, and instead encourages the use of private sector standards.
This is relevant to DOD system support and acquisition, as the military services are increasingly relying on private sources of supply and are buying non-developmental, "off-the shelf" items. DoD documents themselves are emphasizing performance and goals, rather than specifying exactly how something shall be done.

It is interesting to note that the Federal Government and state governments are adopting Internet standards, specifications, and protocols created by the World Wide Web Consortium (WWWC). This organization has developed protocols for Internet and email transmission and interface, as well as the Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), the Extensible Markup Language (XML), and others. The use of these international standards enables users throughout the world to access the vast abundance of on-line information and enjoy the convenience this provides. This is generally true regardless of PC type and operating system.
